Planning your path
Each element of the roadmap can be mapped to one or more courses within the member’s website.
Note that while these stages are ordered, there is flexibility in how you approach the first four stages. However, these first four stages must be completed prior to stage 5 being attempted.
Growth Counselling Institute exists to foster the creation of healthy biblical counselling ministries in local churches through training, accreditation, and awareness of primacy of Scripture in counselling and Christian living.
If we are to build a culture that upholds the supremacy of Scripture we must ensure our accredited members are appropriately trained and have demonstrated competence to help other believers grow in Christlikeness.
However, there are a variety of training solutions available today, and our desire is to interoperate with the broader biblical counselling movement by accepting the legitimacy of outside training facilities working from common convictions and methodology.
The roadmap below assumes all training is being done through Growth Counselling Institute. If you have previous training through a like-minded institution, talk to us about how your training maps to elements of the roadmap below.
Biblical counselling has a growing body of knowledge from which to draw. Familiarity with this body of literature will connect the counsellor to the broader community of biblical counsellors, and with the a wider intellectual tradition.
Theology is foundational to any biblical ministry, and this is vital to biblical counselling. Accredited GCI members must demonstrate understanding of orthodox Christian doctrine and how these are relevant to interpersonal ministry.
Biblical counselling approaches people and their problems differently to secular psychology and integrationist counselling. Accredited members understand these distinctions and can articulate key differences and why these are important.
Counsellors must understand how the human heart operates in the real world. There is no better way to form an understanding of how sanctification takes place, than by committing to personal growth. Every accredited member must demonstrate that biblical change has taken place in his or her own life.
Starting out with counselling can present a number of challenges, so we work with counsellors through their first cases, discussing challenges, exploring options and providing feedback so that counsellors are never alone and gain confidence in ministry.
Counsellors who use the Growth Counselling Institute logo have been personally interviewed by the Growth Counselling Institute board. Accredited counsellors are connected with Growth Counselling Institute leaders and other counsellors and are recognized as leaders within the biblical counselling community.
All your hard work has paid off. At this point, you have demonstrated that you have the knowledge of the will of God and an understanding of how to apply the scriptures to a variety of problems. At this stage, we want to help you fit into a local church and establish a thriving counselling ministry.
Accredited members must demonstrate a commitment to continue to grow as a counsellor through interaction within the Growth Counselling Institute community and by regular reviews.
